2018 iPhones Expected to Use Intel Modems Exclusively

2018 iPhones to rely solely on Intel baseband chips, KGI claims

Latest research note from well-respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI, obtained and reported by 9to5Mac, shows that Apple would like to completely eliminate its reliance on Qualcomm modems for its iPhone, and instead partner with Intel to start providing the modems it needs. Qualcomm was previous charged with a $1.23 billion fine by European Union regulators that accused the company of paying Apple to use only its chips to prohibit competitors from producing chips for Apple's iPhone.

In a detailed note citing extensive channel checks with chip suppliers, brokerage Nomura Instinet said it anticipated that Apple would drop Qualcomm in favor of a handful of other suppliers, as it seeks to reduce materials costs for iPhones. Presently Apple and Qualcomm are embroiled in a legal tussle and Qualcomm has charged Apple of sharing proprietary code with Intel. We were hearing news that Apple would release its new phone with the integration of LTE models of Qualcomm and Intel. Qualcomm baseband components will be excluded from 2018 iPhone altogether, according to Kuo. Intel has a few advantages to offer as well. Its XMM 7560 baseband chips support 4×4 MIMO technology, which would enable faster LTE transmission speeds. A baseband is a processor inside phones that manages all its radio functions, or all functions that require an antenna.

Trump's administration also commented on the media shutdown by the government, noting the move was restrictive and intimidating. Matiangi claimed that the media's complicity in the mock inauguration would have led to the deaths of thousands of Kenyans.

Intel's XMM 7560 modems support both CDMA and GSM, which means Apple could launch a single iPhone model that would work across all the major U.S. carriers such as AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

The iPhone Xs is expected to sport a 5.8-inch OLED screen and the iPhone Xs Plus a 6.5-inch OLED display. After losing the iPhone business, Qualcomm will be more aggressive in securing orders from Chinese smartphone vendors. Apple is locked in a bitter legal fight with Qualcomm over royalties and patent licensing terms. Qualcomm even went so far as to file suit against Apple's device manufacturers (Foxconn, Pegatron, Wistron, and Compal Electronics). Rather than hold a grudge, Apple would be likely to look at the big picture and avoid putting all its eggs in one basket with Intel.
