Maldivian Supreme Court rescinds ruling to release opposition leaders

Maldives: Release Supreme Court judges and opposition politicians immediately

President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of Emergency on Monday.

The court said in a brief statement that they must be freed until fair trials could be conducted without undue influence.

China, the United States and India have already issued advisories against travelling to the Maldives, though most tourists would only pass through rather than stay in Male, the densely populated capital where political tensions are highest.

The constitutional rights suspended by president Yameen effectively quashed any moves by the opposition to impeach him while also stripping the Supreme Court of any authority.

Mr Nasheed also called on the USA to stop Maldives government officials from making transactions through American banks.

For their part, India and the USA said they were "concerned" and troubled by the emergency decree, while the United Nations, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Germany urged Yameen to lift it and restore civil liberties.

"The US is troubled and disappointed by reports that Maldivian President Yameen has declared a State of Emergency, which gives sweeping powers to security forces to arrest and detain suspects, bans public gatherings, imposes travel restrictions, and suspends parts of the Maldivian Constitution..."

With Maldives in turmoil+ following a face off between the government and its Supreme Court, India is expected to follow a standard operating procedure (SOP) that includes keeping the troops in readiness, government sources indicated on Tuesday.

His lawyer, Maumoon Hameed, said Gayoom faced charges including bribery and attempting to overthrow the government.

The government did not comment on soldiers entering the Supreme Court building or on Gayoom's arrest, but the president's main rival, who lives in exile, urged people not to obey what he called an "unlawful order".

"President Yameen has systematically alienated his coalition, jailed or exiled every major opposition political figure, deprived elected members of parliament of their right to represent their voters in the legislature, revised laws to erode human rights. and weakened the institutions of government", the US State Department said in a statement.

Abdullah Riyaz, a former Commissioner of Police said, "People of Maldives are demanding the President to step down".

The Army has also arrested former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

"I had to declare a national emergency because there was no other way to investigate these judges".
