Officials Investigating Possible Cyberattack At Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

The players have been the subject of intense scrutiny and the team was thrown together only two weeks ago, with limited time to practice. Victory on this night at the Kwandong Hockey Center wasn't going to come on the scoreboard, but from the idea that perhaps sports really can help bring people together, even at a time when things look so bleak.

Fielding the joint hockey team was one of the key agreements reached after several rounds of talks on how to cooperate during the Olympics, which run through February 25.

But cyberattacks and other forms of assault were a big point of fearful contention prior to the games in South Korea as tensions with long-time, adjacent adversary North Korea and much of the diplomatic world have become even more strained.

Pence did not meet with the North Korean delegation while in South Korea, and did not exchange greetings with Kim Yo Jong during the Olympic Games opening ceremony, despite being seated only a short distance apart. As hockey goes, well, it was grand political theater.

The result: A heady, sometimes surreal, state of affairs in a South Korea that has seen far more threat than charm out of the North. It figured to be because no matter which side of the border they were representing, Korean hockey players simply aren't ready to compete on such a big world stage. Startlingly, he also equalled the record for the longest gap between Olympic medals, with that pair coming 20 years after he claimed silver at the 1994 Lillehammer Games. So, too, did the problems of integrating the required minimum of three North Koreans on the squad in just a few days time.

Moon is eager to use Kim Yo Jong's presence at the Games to restore regular communication with North Korea and eventually pull it into nuclear talks.

Fans roared every time a Korean got the puck on her stick, and Han Soojin almost put the team on the board with a shot from the left circle that hit the crossbar early in the first period.

The final was 8-0, though it hardly mattered.

The lunch Saturday at Seoul's presidential mansion between Moon and Kim Yo Jong was the most significant diplomatic encounter between the rivals in years.

"We are one, " the crowd chanted during breaks in the action.

Cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin reached new all time highs that were completely unexpected for most of the financial analysts. They are not following securities laws. "We have made it clear what the law is, ” he said.

After meeting with Moon, the North Korean delegates boarded a bullet train to Gangneung, a coastal city hosting some Olympic events.

On Friday night, a huge crowd gathered in the freezing Olympics Stadium as performances displayed the sweep of Korean history and culture. "I think in the first period we were nervous and it was hard to come back from that". "They all had the same jersey on".

The North has sent almost 500 people to the Pyeongchang Games including officials, athletes, artists and cheerleaders after the Koreas agreed to a series of conciliatory gestures to mark the games.

"The chemistry on the team is better than I ever predicted", said Korea coach Sarah Murray, brushing off the heavy defeat. A senior White House official described Pence's tact as ignoring the North Koreans, but not avoiding them.

But everyone was politically correct afterward. They have to end the day of provocation and menacing.

North Korea's nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam also partook in the historic luncheon with Moon.

When it was over it seemed no one wanted to leave the ice.

On Saturday morning, after the opening ceremony, Pence tweeted his agreement with former Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, who had said on Fox News that the positioning of North Korea near South Korea at the opening ceremony was a "propaganda charade" by North Korea.

Presumably there was nothing in it about scoring on a power play.
