NY bomber Ahmad Khan Rahimi sentenced to life in prison

Manhattan bomber sentenced to life

Ahmad Khan Rahimi is seen in an undated photo released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after a bombing in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood left 30 injured on September 17, 2016.

"Ahmad Khan Rahimi will spend the rest of his life behind bars", said FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr.

"I don't harbor hate towards anyone", Rahimi added at one point, "but through life experience, I have learned to understand why there's such frustration between the Muslim community overseas and the American people".

"The nature of the crime was heinous, wanton and life-threatening ... it's inexplicable that anyone would do that intentionally", said US District Judge Richard Berman.

Regardless, the judge said, Rahimi deserved multiple life prison terms.

Rahimi was born in Afghanistan but was a naturalized USA citizen.

Two days after the bombs went off, police ended a manhunt for Rahimi with a shootout in Linden, New Jersey.

A defense lawyer says Rahimi once aspired to be a police officer.

FBI Finds No Evidence of Attack in Death of Border Agent
Martinez and Garland were found injured on November 18 in a rock-strewn culvert that runs under Interstate 10 at about 11:20 p.m. But they are not connected to Martinez's death, or his partner's injuries, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday.

Rahimi, 30, was previously found guilty of eight federal charges in connection with a September 2016 bombing that injured 30 in the Chelsea neighborhood.

Rahimi is a naturalized US citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in Elizabeth, N.J. Prosecutors describe him as acting alone, inspired by terrorist propaganda on the Internet.

"(Another inmate) asked me how are we going to watch the news and I told him I don't need to watch the news because I am the news", Rahimi allegedly told a family member in a jailhouse phone call, while he was on trial.

He was convicted in October on all eight counts brought against him, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place. A Bangladeshi driver detonated a bomb in a subway passageway, wounding himself and three other people in December. The other bomb, four blocks north, was discovered and rendered safe before it could explode.

Rahimi is also accused of detonating a pipe bomb near a charity run in Seaside Park, N.J. No one was injured there.

"Rahimi's conviction and sentencing are victories for New York City and our nation in the fight against terror".

Rahimi, a naturalized USA citizen who was born in Afghanistan, was arrested after a gunfight with New Jersey police, who found he was carrying a journal with praise for Islamic terrorists and promises of violence.
