Facebook Losing Young Users to Snapchat at Fast Pace

The Guardian reports that 500,000 over-55s are expected to join Facebook this year, meaning there will be 6.4 million people over 55, the second-biggest group after 16-34s.

Facebook remains the most popular social network in the USA market with an estimated 169.5 million users this year. It now has separate pages for brand stories, which makes it easier for users to spot content from their friends. eMarketer estimates that Snapchat will have more users than Instagram in the attractive 12-24 age bracket.

This year, Instagram will add 1.6 million users younger than 24, while Snapchat will add 1.9 million, eMarketer says. Snapchat will continue to have more users ages 12 to 24 compared with that of Instagram.

EMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson says her teenage daughter lost access to her Facebook account when she got a new phone two months ago.

If photos are the hottest thing in social right now, Facebook can console itself with its brilliant acquisition move of yesteryear.

The social network has more than 2 billion monthly active users around the world and the company's founder Mark Zuckerberg has been busy in his attempts to connect the world to his social network.

Notably, this is not the first time Facebook has been stamped with "young users" problem.

Facebook declined to comment on the eMarketer report. So I don't believe this will be as much of a problem for Snapchat as it continues to be for Facebook.

Ages 12-17 will decline by 5.6%.

US Senate passes funding bill in bid to end shutdown
The House voted 240 to 186 in support of a bipartisan package to extend United States government funding till March 23. The legislation that provides these funds must be passed by a certain deadline.

A social scientist, Julie Smith from Denver said in a statement that, "Teens want that instant gratification". Their minds move quickly.

Instagram is set to remain the more widely used service, but the report suggests Facebook has some work to do with younger users.

American kids are ditching Facebook for other social media platforms, and 2018 might bring the largest online migration yet. So, too, is the ability to communicate one-on-one or in smaller groups.

Snapchat is apparently still cool enough to steal a share of young people.

A 9.3 percent drop for Facebook users under 11-years-old.

A 5.6 percent decline in users between 12- and 17-years-old. At the same time, Snapchat and Instagram will add users from that age group. It is expected to hit 169.5 million users in the USA this year, up less than 1 percent from 2017, according to the eMarketer forecast. EMarketer estimates that Instagram will add 1.6 million US users to Snapchat's 1.9 million users in 2018.

Surely, teenagers aren't going to stop using social media. Meanwhile, Facebook is failing to add new things to draw young people in.

Still, for a company like Snapchat that's confronting the Facebook empire, any gains help.
