How many Russians did the United States of America kill in Syria?

Reports: Russian Military Contractors Killed in US-Led Attack in Syria

The U.S. strike in Syria on forces supporting the government of Bashar Assad last week killed several Russian mercenaries, according to multiple reports.

"According to preliminary information, we could be talking about the deaths of five people - presumably Russian citizens - as a result of an armed confrontation whose causes are being examined", Zakharova told a regular news briefing.

The comments by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov come after reports surfaced this week alleging that a number of Russian men fighting informally alongside the Syrian government were killed in clashes between the USA -led coalition and pro-government fighters who attacked a headquarters of the Syrian Democratic Forces near the town of Khusham.

Despite joint pledges to work together to destroy ISIS and other terror networks, Russia and the United States find themselves on opposite sides of the ongoing conflict; with U.S. forces equipping Syrian rebels and Russian forces supporting the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The sources, identified as one US official and three Russians, said the Russians died in a failed attack on a base held by the United States.

At the height of the multi-frog war in Syria, the scenario where American troops would injure or even kill Russian mercenaries is something many in the defense industry and military commentators feared the most.

While it may be partly true -the USA tried to get the Russians through the so-called deconfliction hotline to get the attack called off, the fact of the matter is that the Russians do control their forces in Syria including Wagner and could have pulled them out.

The T-72 tank was reportedly preparing to fire at a position held by American forces and US-backed Syrian rebels, in Al Tabiyeh, Syria, on Saturday.

"We can't offer support for peace on the one hand and ignore the fact that the chief sponsor of terrorism in the Middle East and its terrorist militia are digging in", Haley told the council, also blaming Russian Federation for failing to control the violence. Its plan was to form a constitutional committee that includes representatives from government, opposition and independent groups.

Russian media said Russian private contractors were part of pro-government forces that advanced on oil fields in the eastern Deir el-Zour province and were targeted by the United States.

It's important to note that the operating in Syria as an occupying force without any global mandate, whereas the Russian military is operating in Syria at the behest of the Syrian government, as recognized by the United Nations. Elements of both sides are fighting the last remnants of the Islamic State group in Syria.

Two Russians told the website that 200 of their countrymen died in the failed assault, but a U.S. official said the death toll was about 100 with another 200 to 300 wounded.

The Russians never expected that the U.S. forces would call in air strikes and wipe out the 300 odd attackers trying to smoke the SDF/Special Operations base.

It saw 500 pro-Syrian regime forces assaulted US-backed forces in what the United States called an "unprovoked attack".

The Russian Defense Ministry later said 25 Syrian militia fighters had been wounded in the airstrike. Unconfirmed Russian social media sources claim that two units of private military contractors were "massacred", with one reportedly being completely wiped out, while the other was "cut to pieces" by the US onslaught. Those claims could not be verified.
