Introducing Uber Health, Removing Transportation as a Barrier to Care

Uber Health Will Drive You To Doctor's Appointments

Uber has launched a new service, Uber Health, that provides a ride-hailing platform specifically to healthcare providers.

When summoning an Uber on the app, customers have the option of choosing several different types of automobiles, including Uber Pool, UberX, Black Car, SUV and WAV services.

Numerous rides are provided to people who can't drive-either because of age, poverty or medical condition-and Medicare and Medicaid providers cover at least some of the cost of transportation.

As for the business model, Uber Heatlh charges its healthcare organization customers only for the cost of individual rides, which are at par with what those rides would cost via the consumer app. Access to the dashboard and the reporting tools are included free. Mighty contributor Dani S. told The Mighty that Uber Health sounded like a good idea and that he typically uses Lyft to get to appointments. However, using Uber as an ambulance can put a driver in an awkward position for suddenly taking on a job they weren't trained for. "They're having all those conversations anyway, and one of the conversations they're going to have with is, 'By the way, how are you getting home?' And to the extent that the patient doesn't have an answer to that question, they can offer them an Uber at that time", Holley said.

The vehicle can either be sent to the patient's house, or it can pick patients up at a medical facility and take them home.

According to Uber, over 3.6 million Americans "miss doctor appointments due to lack of reliable transportation" on an annual basis.

Lastly, the device uses Snapdragon 435 SoC, which is significantly less powerful than the Snapdragon 450 SoC used in the Blade V9. The phone is powered by an octa-core processor and comes in two builds: 2GB RAM with 16GB storage, 4GB RAM with 64GB storage.

Uber Health is now being used by more than 100 healthcare organizations in the United States including clinics, hospitals, rehab centers, senior care facilities, and more as part of a beta program.

Uber Health's primary goal seems to be the elimination of stress and worry that many patients feel when forced to manage appointments on their own.

The service also enables access for patients without a smartphone as the rides can be scheduled through text message. Uber already has over 100 healthcare organizations on the platform, thanks to a private beta that began last summer.

Spokesperson Laura Murray said the insurer found that covering transportation expenses helps patients keep regular appointments and preventive care visits, which can include things like flu shots or checkups. The cost of missed appointments is estimated to be $150 billion per year in the USA, according to industry experts.

Uber says it's a way to help provide reliable, comfortable transportation for those needing medical assistance. The service, which complies with HIPAA privacy rules, partners Uber's fleet of drivers with hospitals, rehab centers, senior care facilities, physical therapy centers and more.
