YouTube tightens restrictions on firearms videos

YouTube Testing Picture-in-Picture on the Web

Modify the search to just "gun" and the amount of hits double. Now, promoting a paid streaming platform is a big change, but the company is well aware of what this step means.

The company has made a decision to take a hard stance on videos that promote gun modifications, tutorials, and ban all videos that link directly to sites that sell weapons or accessories like bump stocks. The amassing of the public relations-friendly moves have been seen as a response to the February 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 students and faculty members dead.

Advocates for gun rights have slammed the media giant's attempt to restrict content.

Guns for sale are seen inside of Dick's Sporting Goods store in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S., February 28, 2018. Another has opted to show its video on an adult-content site, adding that they will have more freedoms than the Google-owned company.

Bloomberg reported at least one firearms-related channel has been suspended.

Following the shooting that took place in Las Vegas back in October, YouTube banned videos that gave instructions on how to install and use bump stocks. The caption accompanied a photo of a gun, a loaded magazine and a "Make America Great Again" hat.

Though it's listed among racier clips common to a porn site, the video appears exactly as it does on YouTube.

Washington is also pressing China to reduce its staggering $375 billion trade surplus with the United States by $100 billion. China's patent applications at WIPO have recorded double-digit annual growth in every year since 2003.

Starting in April, content that features firearms will be reviewed more carefully and removed when in violation of the new guidelines.

InRange TV said in a Facebook post that it is "looking for a safe harbor" for its content and viewers.

Cohen also outlines YouTube's plans to "smoke out" people who can afford a subscription and aim to commit them to the new service.

The move has angered YouTube's community of gun enthusiasts, including Karl Kasarda and Ian McCollum, who run channel InRange TV on the site, who said they will start sharing videos on PornHub.

On the other hand, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a gun industry lobbying group, called YouTube's new policy "worrisome".

The statement went on to say that such restrictions "impinge on the Second Amendment", and stifle "commercial free speech", which is protected under the Constitution. YouTube isn't planning on fully enforcing the new policies until next month.
