Ancestry.com Test Reveals Woman's OB/GYN Might Be Her Biological Father

My biological dad turned out to be my mom’s fertility doc

Rowlette was convinced that the Ancestry.com test was an error, and mentioned this to Ashby, who after examining the results on her own was "devastated" to see Dr. Mortimer's name. In it, Rowlette accused Gerald E. Mortimer, a now-retired obstetrician gynecologist in Idaho Falls, of fraud and medical negligence, among other things.

A United States woman is suing a fertility doctor after discovering through an online ancestry website the man had secretly fathered her.

"While the family understands the public's interest in their story, they ask that their privacy be respected as they focus on the hard process of healing from this trauma".

Mortimer told the family at the time that he used the father's sperm along with an anonymous donor they picked out, but the family claims that didn't happen. The lawsuit alleges Dr Mortimer actually inseminated Ms Ashby with his own genetic material.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Idaho Falls is also listed as a defendant. "Dr. Mortimer knew Kelli Rowlette was his biological daughter but did not disclose this to Ms. Ashby or Mr. Fowler", the 14-page complaint noted.

Rowlette and her family seem convinced by the results of her Ancestry.com test, but there have been plenty of questions over the years about the trustworthiness of private, internet-based services like it. DNA tests from Ancestry.com and 23andMe have been known to show slightly different geographical ancestry for siblings or even identical twins, for example.

Rowlette was likely expecting to discover new details about her distant ancestors, but she instead learned that her DNA sample matched that of a doctor in Idaho.

Ms Ashby and Mr Fowler sought help from Dr Mortimer in 1979 because they were having trouble conceiving a child. It was her birth certificate, and according to the lawsuit, she noticed a familiar name signed on it: "Dr. Mortimer".

Following news of the lawsuit, a spokeswoman for Ancestry.com said in a statement Tuesday that DNA testing "helps people make new and powerful discoveries about their family history and identity".

"From discovering their ethnicity to connecting with distant relatives, the largest DNA network in the world is helping more people find the singular story in their DNA. Anyone who takes a test can change their DNA matching settings at any time, meaning that if they opt out, their profile and relationship will not be visible to other customers".

Idaho Falls attorney Michael Wheiler had just been given the lawsuit Tuesday afternoon, and said he could not a provide a detailed comment until he was more familiar with the case.
