Australia probes Google over user data

At a time of increased scrutiny of companies that collect masses of user data, two U.S. senators are calling on federal regulators to investigate a Google product called Location History. Google claims they developed "cleanroom" versions, however the lawsuit has gone on for some time and after a trip on appeal by Oracle to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in March, Google was found to have infringed upon their copyright. Everyone who uses Google services must agree to these terms and conditions, but there is now a debate over whether this consent is valid.

The Oracle experts say phone owners' data ends up being consumed even if Google Maps is not in use or aeroplane mode is switched on. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the country's privacy commissioner said they were reviewing the findings of a report by Oracle Corp.

Australia's competition watchdog has recently stated that it is investigating Google over reports that the tech giant has been harvesting vast amounts of personal data from Android smartphone users to sell targeted advertising. "This allows it to know where a device is connecting or attempting to connect without using the phone's location service".

We discussed Google's utter disregard for your privacy in numerous announcements seen at I/O 2018 keynote, on Orbital, our weekly technology podcast, which you can subscribe to via Apple Podcasts or RSS, download the episode, or just hit the play button below.

Section 144 imposed in Aurangabad because of communal clashes
It quoted an unidentified police official as saying that an independent corporator was responsible for instigating the violence. The youths from different groups burned some shops and also attacking each other with some pelting stones.

Transferring that information to Google means using up gigabytes of data that consumers have paid for under data packages purchased from local telecom service providers, according to the Oracle report. Presently, a gigabyte of data costs about $3.60-$4.50 a month.

Quartz first reported in January about the sly and confusing ways Google cajoles Android users to opt into Location History, and the plethora of data points the company collects when it's enabled.

David Vaile, chairman of the Australian Privacy Foundation, notes that the search giant started such tracking for its Street View surveying, and now, it is being updated with the volumes of data that the Android users are sending back.

Australian telecoms companies are now asking Google about the accuracy of the allegations. Further, referring to My Account in the settings, it says that users have full control over their data and how it can be used.
