Facebook Suspends 200 Apps, Possible Data Misuse

Answering questions Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will appear before members of the European Parliament to answer questions about the improper use of users data

Facebook's head of public policy Rebecca Stimson wrote a letter to the Committee, explaining that the company had provided information on its approach to data collection and privacy all across the globe, suggesting that after his grilling by USA senators Zuckerberg doesn't need to face questions from UK MPs.

It has today published Facebook's answers, which were submitted to the committee yesterday - some three days after the deadline - and, somewhat unsurprisingly, the MPs said that these also fail to fully address their concerns.

Damian Collins, the Conservative chair of the digital culture media and sport select committee, said there are "discrepancies" between Schroepfer and Zuckerberg's testimonies.

The Justice Department and the FBI are investigating Cambridge Analytica, the now-defunct political-data firm at the center of Facebook's data privacy scandal, according to The New York Times.

Facebook suspended the myPersonality app in April of this year, four years after it started scooping up users' information. In order to avoid a second Cambridge Analytica data scandal, it has also investigated thousands of other apps that may have misused people's personal data. While the affected 3 million users didn't have their usernames or passwords leaked, the amount of accompanying information such as age, gender, relationship status, and in 15,000 cases status updates, makes the de-anonymising process significantly easier.

The political data firm announced earlier this month that it was shutting down and filing for bankruptcy, claiming the negative press made business impossible.

Kogan created thisisyourdigitallife (the personality test of Cambridge Analytica fame), but was listed as part of the myPersonality project until mid-2014.

Facebook said that it recognised "the seriousness of these issues" and provided written answers to 39 questions posed by the MPs.

Their criticism follows an announcement by regulators that they are going to pursue their investigation into scandal-hit Cambridge Analytica despite the firm announcing its collapse.

UK Parliament roars: Oi!

Facebook has now held lengthy meetings or evidence sessions around the world.

Social-media companies have come under intense scrutiny over reports that Facebook failed to protect the privacy of its users.

Just how easy was gaining unauthorised access to the Facebook users' data?

There were a couple of new insights, such as detail on the extent of Facebook data gathering across the net.

Stimson's letter, however, did not dampen the desire of the committee to hear from Zuckerberg directly.

Australia probes Google over user data
Further, referring to My Account in the settings, it says that users have full control over their data and how it can be used. Australian telecoms companies are now asking Google about the accuracy of the allegations.
