Case of Nipah Virus suspected after sudden death of bats

Nipah: Medicines to be brought from Malaysia, says minister

The citizens in the Telangana State have been asked to not to panic as the state health department is undertaking measures to ensure that the hospitals here are well equipped. "Sorry. Please raise our children well", she wrote in a letter to her husband before she died on Monday, reported the BBC.

The natural host of the virus is believed to be fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, Pteropus genus.

Studies into a Nipah outbreak in Siliguri, West Bengal, in 2001 have clearly illustrated the virus' capacity to spread in hospital settings, both to healthcare staff and to other patients. 12 of them have been tested positive for Nipah Virus. "So far, we are not receiving any requests for cancellations, though people are anxious and are inquiring about the prevailing conditions there", she says.

Symptoms of the infection, which was first identified in 1999, include headaches, fever, respiratory illness and drowsiness.

Extending a helping hand to the family of nurse Lini Puthussery, who died after contracting Nipah from her patients, the Kerala government on Wednesday made a decision to give a government job to her husband and Rs 10 lakh each to two of their children.

Police departments throughout the South Bay lowered their flags to half-staff for officers who died in the line of duty. Boland says the event is a time for reflection, and it reminds officers that the work they do can be extremely risky .

Suparna Bharadwaj, the principal of the school, said, "In this situation, there is a panic in the people after this episode, as the way the bats are dying, Napa Virus's fears can not be sidelined". Her body was cremated soon after her death over fears the virus could spread; her family wasn't able to see her. It has urged travelers to be extra cautious while visiting Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur districts. A health department official said the distribution of protective gear in hospitals began on May 19. This time around, the outbreak has been detected in the Southern state, where the first victims were three members of a family in Kozhikode, followed by a nurse who took care of the infected.

Two "control rooms" in the worst-hit Kozhikode district have been set up to closely monitor the spread of the virus.

There had been no travel advisories issued Wednesday morning by the Indian central government or the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi.

The World Health Organization has named Nipah as one of the eight priority diseases that could cause a global epidemic, alongside the likes of Ebola and Zika.

Nipah has killed more than 260 people in Malaysia, Bangladesh and India in outbreaks since 1998.
