Facebook is killing its Trending news section

The feature accounted for an average of less than 1.5% of clicks to news publishers from.

Trending Topics started in 2014 and caused plenty of headaches for Facebook. "So we're exploring new ways to help people stay informed about timely, breaking news that matters to them, while making sure the news they see on Facebook is from trustworthy and quality sources".

Trending is being pulled from Facebook next week and it will also remove products and third-party partner integrations that rely on the Trends API, the company said.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, later met with conservative commentators and leaders to defuse an uproar over the allegations.

The Trending section is no longer trending among Facebook users.

We'll see if doing away with the Trending section and delivering more meaningful news does anything to improve user trust in Facebook.

"From research we found that over time people found the product to be less and less useful", Facebook's head of news products, Alex Hardiman, said in a blog post on Friday. Over the past few years, the feature, which displays news stories popular on the platform, has become a case study for why algorithms can't always do the job of a human, and why they can't solve Facebook's problems.

The company instead said it will explore new news related projects like letting publishers include a "breaking news" label on their posts in Facebook's newsfeed. These efforts will be funded by Facebook itself, the company said. Gizmodo reported in 2016 that the contract workers operating the section gave it a political slant, choosing not to link to news that was slanted towards conservatives. But at that time fake news was not a popular term and no foreign country had been accused of trying to influence the United States elections through social media, as Russian Federation would be.

Facebook didn't announce any plans to bring back Trending, or some version of it in the future.

"There are other ways for us to better invest our resources", Hardiman told the AP.

The company is also funding news videos, created exclusively for Facebook by publishers it would not yet name. More problematic was the feature's tendency to spread fake news, particularly during the 2016 presidential election, The Associated Press noted.
