Canada trade minister attacks Trump duties, says Ottawa will resist tariffs

The American move - which prompted retaliatory measures from Canada and others - threatens to drive a powerful wedge into the G7, and could fracture the long-standing multilateral relationship into something observers describe as a "G6 plus one", with the the outlier.

Mnuchin also noted that when it came to the other countries' views on USA trade actions that "there was clearly a consensus from the rest of them", according to the Wall Street Journal.

In a CBC radio interview Friday in Halifax, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the tariffs "ridiculous" and predicted they would backfire. Even more unlikely is the fact that the target of the criticism is the US, which has done more than any other country to establish the free-trade principles upon which the global economy functions today. Mexico complained the tariffs will "distort global trade" and said it would penalize US imports including pork, apples, grapes, cheeses and flat steel.

Heather Conley, a former U.S. State Department official now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said the divisions on trade meant it would be hard for leaders to focus on the other issues.

The Trump administration's shifting stance on China may complicate Ross's ability to extract concessions from Beijing.

"Your comments, in addition to political meetings between your staff and President Trump's advisers, for which there has been little information provided to us, are quite worrisome".

In addition to asking the reconsider and reverse the tariffs, the six finance leaders noted that because of the actions taken by the US, "collaboration and cooperation has been put at risk".

In the fiscal year that ended September 30, the US government collected $34.6 billion in customs duties and fees.

Morneau, who presided at the ministerial meeting in Whistler, said even though the group found common ground on many subjects, G7 members are now forced to do whatever they can to persuade Trump to withdraw the tariffs.

Giuliani: Trump actually could pardon himself
Sanders on Sunday referred questions about the matter to Trump's outside legal team. Giuliani did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The prime minister expressed his disappointment with the decision by the US administration to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum", says a readout from this office.

Trump wrote in a series of tweets that his trade negotiations with China and a slew of US allies would break down large trade barriers faced by American farmers.

That's the only way forward, now that Trump has triggered a sprawling trade war by imposing import duties of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminum from Canada, Mexico and Europe, multiple sources familiar with Ottawa's position told The Canadian Press. Initially announced in March, the levies took effect Friday.

Both Ryan and McConnell were publicly critical of Trump's tariffs in recent days. Canada is a secure supplier of aluminum and steel to the United States defence industry, putting aluminum in American planes and steel in American tanks. On Friday, for example, Maine Congressional members urged Trump not to put a tariff on seafood because they are anxious the Chinese would retaliate with a similar measure and hurt the state's lobster industry, which exports millions of dollars worth of lobster to the Asian country.

Trudeau said Trump seemed agreeable before Pence called him on Tuesday.

Trudeau said he refused to go because of the "totally unacceptable" precondition.

The EU also plans to slap heavy tariffs on other products such as bourbon, U.S. denim, motorcycles, motor boats etc.

The European Union and China said they will deepen ties on trade and investment as a result. He said he wanted to ensure that the Canadian and USA aluminium sectors work together to become an efficient North American unit that can "successfully compete with China and anyone else in the rest of the world".

Other allies have denounced the tariffs in similarly harsh terms.
