Apple, Samsung Finally Settle Patent Dispute

The Apple vs Samsung iPhone-copying lawsuit is finally over

One of Silicon Valley's most-watched legal fights has finally ended.

A patent infringement case brought by Apple against Samsung, in which it accused the South Korean tech giant of ripping off the iPhone in a case that went all the way to the U.S. supreme court, is over.

The latest chapter in the saga was just last month when the jury of the retrial awarded $539M in damages to Apple, which Samsung immediately appealed.

Cupertino-based Apple and Samsung agreed Wednesday to settle their long-running dispute over design and utility patent-infringement allegations at the U.S. District Court of Northern California in San Jose. Apple wanted about $1 billion. This year a jury set out to decide if Samsung owed Apple $1 billion for the infringement or a "measly" $28 million.

Michael Risch, a professor of patent law at Villanova University, said that because of the recent verdict the settlement likely called for Samsung to make an additional payment to Apple. Samsung had been arguing for smaller penalties directly related to the value of components or features impacted by the patents.

Mexico hold off South Korea to pile pressure on Germany
He told Fifa.com: "What's the point of us winning [against Germany] if we then go and lose to Sweden or Korea Republic? ". A 2-1 success over Group F rivals South Korea in Rostov all-but sealed safe passage into the knockout stages for Mexico .

The ruling, of course, didn't spell the end for Apple and Samsung's legal squabbles.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment on the terms of the settlement but said Apple "cares deeply about design" and that "this case has always been about more than money".

Reuters reports that "Apple and Samsung are rivals for the title of world's largest smartphone maker, and the dollar sums involved in the decision are unlikely to have an impact on either's bottom line". It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple.

"We're grateful to the jury for their service and pleased they agree that Samsung should pay for copying our products", it added.

The three design patents in the case apply to the shape of the iPhone's black screen with rounded edges and a bezel, and the rows of colourful icons displayed. This led the South Korean tech giant to countersue the Cupertino, California-headquartered Apple in the same year.
