Woman Dies After Exposure to Soviet-Era Nerve Agent in England

Couple exposed to 'unknown substance' near British town where Russian spy was poisoned

"Dawn leaves behind her family, including three children, and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely hard time", Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing said.

Dawn Sturgess, from Durrington, died at Salisbury District Hospital earlier this evening, the Meteropolitan Police said.

Her boyfriend Charlie Rowley, 45, was also exposed to the nerve agent around the same time and place - and he remains in critical condition and in a coma at the Salisbury hospital. Hours later, emergency workers responded to the same address after the 45-year-old man had fallen ill, police said.

Officers are still trying to work out how Ms Sturgess and Mr Rowley were exposed to the nerve agent although tests have confirmed they touched a contaminated item with their hands.

"Dawn leaves behind her family, including three children, and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely hard time", said Neil Basu, assistant commissioner and head of UK Counter Terrorism policing.

Police had been working to discover how she and Rowley had come across an item contaminated with Novichok, the same toxin used in an attack on Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter four months ago.

Britain and its allies accused Russian Federation of trying to kill the Skripals, prompting angry denials and sparking an global diplomatic crisis. Russian Federation has denied the allegation.

British PM Theresa May has expressed outrage over the death of Dawn Sturgess.

He said Washington stood ready to slap duties on hundreds of billions more in Chinese imports once Friday's tariffs took effect. U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports have provoked retaliatory measures against billions of dollars of American exports.

"We are not in a position to say whether the nerve agent was from the same batch that the Skripals were exposed to", the Met said, adding that the investigation into the attempted murders of the Skripals were ongoing.

"Police and security officials are working urgently to establish the facts of this incident, which is now being investigated as a murder", the statement read. Skripal was discharged from the hospital in May and his daughter was released in April.

The latest poisonings have further inflamed tensions between London and Moscow.

A British woman poisoned by exposure to the nerve agent Novichok has died, according to reports.

Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned by a nerve agent in March.
