Donald Trump names Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court

US President Donald Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, setting the stage for a bruising confirmation battle. "Casey's willingness to oppose any nominee off of a list that includes judges he has previously voted for shows he will oppose President Trump at all costs, even when doing so makes him look like a partisan hack".

The Supreme Court, sitting atop one of the three branches of American government, "has grown in importance over the past few decades", Burrus said. It's about what country the United States of America is going to chart as its course in the future on this Supreme Court.

On Sunday Leonard Leo, a Federalist Society official who has been advising Trump, added a fourth name: that of Thomas Hardiman, 53, a federal appeals court judge in Philadelphia.

With reality television-style suspense, he had kept everyone guessing up until the last moment.

For all the parsing of differences between the finalists on the president's shortlist in recent days - Judge Amy Coney Barrett was praised by conservative Christian groups who believed she held the deepest anti-abortion beliefs, Judge Thomas Hardiman was criticized by those same groups who anxious he might slide to the left as Justices Souter, Kennedy and Blackmun did before him, Kavanaugh raised concerns from some because his anti-abortion opinions were not strong enough - all of those under consideration effectively posed a similar threat to abortion access in the United States.

Kavanaugh, Trump's second nomination to the US Supreme Court, must confirmed by the Senate. "Mr. President, I am grateful to you and I am humbled by your faith in me", he declared. Kavanaugh worked in the Bush White House as an associate counsel, Staff Secretary and Assistant to the President. "Any judge on this list is fruit of a corrupt process straight from the D.C. swamp..."

Hearings for the most recent nominees to the Supreme Court have lasted four or five days, though there were 11 days of hearings for Robert Bork's nomination in 1987.

For Lydia Kuykendal, who works for Gabrielle Giffords gun violence prevention advocacy group, the role the Supreme Court might play in gun control was a key draw for the protest. Those who promote a woman's right to choose an abortion were upset with a Kavanaugh ruling against an immigrant teenager in federal custody who sought an immediate abortion.

Each of the nine justices serves a lifetime appointment. But Judge Kavanaugh may not be so accommodating.

Republicans changed the Senate's rules previous year to allow them to confirm a Supreme Court justice with a simple majority vote.

He pleaded not guilty and never testified, but muttered and made incoherent remarks in court during the eight years of his trial. In 2016, police in Russian Federation conducted a number of raids on suspected cult members in Moscow and St Petersburg.

The front-runner was a front-runner for a reason. In the end, however, the safe pick won out.

Kavanaugh denied any involvement in crafting legal policy allowing for harsh interrogation tactics during the Senate's consideration of his nomination to the D.C. Circuit in 2005 and 2006.

"Judge Kavanaugh has the qualifications that make him immensely qualified to take a seat on the highest court in the land".

It's a promise that has helped cement near-record levels of support for his presidency from Republican voters - and for good reason.

Earlier, Trump had announced he had narrowed his choice to several contenders, building anticipation for the announcement, which generated criticism.

Republicans hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, though with ailing Senator John McCain battling cancer in his home state of Arizona they now can muster only 50 votes. A majority of 51 votes is needed for a confirmation. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has been absent since December and is battling brain cancer. "If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case".

"I intend to review Judge Kavanaugh's decisions on the bench and writings off the bench, and pay careful attention to his responses to questions posed by my colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee".

Some conservatives have expressed concerns about Kavanaugh, questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W. Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice.

The White House and Republican party want the nomination in the bag before November's mid-term elections.
