US service member killed in 'insider attack' in Afghanistan

The Taliban released a statement on Twitter saying an Afghan soldier fired on USA troops in the province of Uruzgan, AFP reported.

US soldier Cpl. Joseph Maciel was killed in an insider or "green-on-blue" attack on Saturday when a traitorous member of the Afghan security force opened fire on his fellow soldiers and American allies.

NATO's statement did not elaborate on the exact circumstances of the attack, but said it was under investigation.

He urged both groups to come to the negotiating table, adding, the USA would be willing to help facilitate the discussions.

That information could not be immediately verified by Afghan or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials.

The two wounded USA service members were not identified but were in "stable" condition on Saturday and are being treated, it added. Task Force 1-28 Infantry is now deployed in support of the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade.

The law firm Perkins Coie was hired to probe Strauss's behavior at Ohio State, where he joined the clinical faculty in 1978. He said the fraud case has nothing to do with what he went through as a student-athlete.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said the wounded service members are in stable condition.

To date this year, three other troops have been killed in hostile incidents in Afghanistan.

The Taliban released a statement praising an Afghan soldier for carrying out the attack, without taking credit for it themselves. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan following the September 11 terror attacks by al-Qaida, which the Taliban government at the time had harbored. The death is the third American military fatality in Afghanistan this year.

The last insider attack occurred in August 2017, CNN reported.

Pompeo also added, perhaps optimistically given Afghanistan's long history of resisting foreign forces, that the Taliban were "beginning to see that they can not wait us out".

The last insider attack that resulted in a United States casualty occurred in June a year ago.
