Russian intel officers indicted for hacking DNC

Ahead of Trump's meeting with Putin, Mueller indicts 12 Russians for hacking DNC emails - Philly

The conference is sandwiched between Friday's indictments of 12 Russian military intelligence officers alleged to have hacked into Democratic party and campaign accounts, and President Donald Trump's long-awaited meeting on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The indictment - which comes days before USA president Donald Trump holds a summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin - is the clearest allegation yet of Russian efforts to meddle in American politics.

"The stories you heard about the 12 Russians yesterday took place during the Obama Administration, not the Trump Administration", Trump wrote.

"Why didn't they do something about it, especially when it was reported that President Obama was informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in September, before the Election?" he tweeted.

GRU officers "in their official capacities engaged in a sustained effort to hack into the computer networks of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democratic National Committee and the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton", a Justice Department statement said. The president said he will ask Putin during the meeting if Russian Federation interfered with the election. This month, the Republicans and Democrats on the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee backed the findings of an assessment from U.S. intelligence agencies that Russian Federation tried to interfere in the 2016 election and acted in favor of Trump and against his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. "It's very important that they meet".

Stolen emails, many politically damaging for Clinton, appeared on WikiLeaks in the campaign's final stretch. The messages were released through fictitious personas like DCLeaks and Guccifer 2.0. And they say that on the same day Trump, in a speech, urged Russia to find Clinton's missing emails, Russian hackers tried for the first time to break into email accounts used by her personal office.

The U.S. homeland security chief says the country's intelligence officials are seeing "persistent Russian efforts" to use social media and other resources to create divisions among the American people.

The White House seized on those points in a statement that offered no condemnation of Russian election interference.

59 percent of Russian citizens believe that the summit between Trump and Putin will have no effect.

Hours before the Justice Department announcement, Trump complained anew that the special counsel's investigation is complicating his efforts to forge a better working relationship with Russian Federation.

Authorities have said Russian agents tried to get into voter registration systems in 21 states before the 2016 elections, breaching one.

Nielsen spoke Saturday at a Philadelphia conference of USA state secretaries of state from across the country.

The indictment identifies the defendants as officers with Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, also known as GRU.

If the involvement of the GRU officers in the hacking effort is proved, it would shatter the Kremlin denials of the Russian state's involvement in the USA elections.

The Russian defendants are not in custody, and it is not clear they will ever appear in an American court.

"The conspirators covertly monitored the computers of dozens of DCCC and DNC employees, implanted hundreds of files containing malicious computer code, and stole emails and other documents", it said.

The charges were drawn up by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director who is looking into Russian interference in the November 2016 vote and whether any members of Trump's campaign team colluded with Moscow.

Trump said at a news conference Friday near London with British Prime Minister Theresa May that he wasn't going into the meeting with Putin with "high expectations".
