United Kingdom top diplomat warns no Brexit deal 'now a very real risk'

Parliament votes for UK to stay in EMA

The Foreign Secretary used a visit to Berlin to say that while a failure to achieve a Brexit deal would be "challenging" for the United Kingdom, it would "thrive" in the long term.

May shook up her team on Tuesday (July 24), sidelining the troublesome ministry that she created two years ago to lead the British withdrawal from the EU. "Both of us will be supported by the Cabinet Office Europe Unit and with this in mind the Europe Unit will have overall responsibility for the preparation and conduct of the negotiations, drawing upon support from DExEU and other departments as required".

Raab even seems to have managed the extraordinary feat of leaving the famously doom-laden business leaders - including chiefs from Lloyds, Shell, Morrison's and Amazon - feeling "marginally more positive than when they went in".

In his first bilateral meeting in his new role, with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, Mr Hunt said: "Britain would find that challenging, but in the end we would find a way not just to survive but to thrive economically".

The country is set to leave the bloc on March 30, but the two sides want to strike a divorce agreement by late October in order to give parliament enough time to endorse a deal.

It means the 1972 European Communities Act, the primary legislation which took the United Kingdom into the EU, will now not be fully repealed until the end of 2020, 21 months after the United Kingdom formally leaves the bloc in March next year.

Ministers are still being persuaded that Theresa May's Chequers agreement is a good idea, the new Brexit secretary had said.

The EU has also raised major questions about the proposal.

Instead, he has told investors that he expects the firm to turn a profit in the third quarter of this year. Tesla is due to report second-quarter earnings after the stock market closes on August 1.

Following the release of the white paper, Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said the plan was the "bad deal" that Mrs May repeatedly refers to.

The European Commission published on Thursday (19 July) a 17-page communication to businesses in the EU warning them of the consequences of a "no deal" Brexit if the United Kingdom crashes out of the bloc next March.

'But they are there simply for the objective of making money and smuggling and that will actually help by keeping these chaps - who might otherwise do silly things - (busy), giving them something useful and money-making to do.

Britain will publish around 70 "technical notices" in August and September setting out what citizens and businesses would need to do.

Challenged about reports of stockpiling food by MPs on the Brexit select committee, Mr Raab said: 'It would be wrong to describe it as the Government doing stockpiling.

The UK is expected to leave the European Union on March 29 next year and while Mr Raab said a deal would be done in October, momentum has somewhat stalled.

In her written statement to parliament, May said: "It is essential that in navigating the UK's exit from the European Union, the government is organised in the most effective way".
