Imran Khan Leads In Pak, Suggest Trends Amid "Rigging" Charges: 10 Facts

ImranKhan

While Sharif's party and the PPP denounced irregularities in the election, if needed 65-year-old Khan could strike deals with independent lawmakers to form a coalition.

The election will be only the second civilian transfer of power in Pakistan's 71-year history.

In his address, Mr Khan said: "If parties are saying there has been vote rigging, they should name the polling stations and we will open an investigation".

Election authorities have not yet confirmed when they expect to announce the results.

"We completely reject this result, completely", said Shehbaz Sharif, leader of the incumbent PML-N party, at a late night press conference in Lahore. He charged fraud and vowed not to accept the results, generating fears that disgruntled losers could delay the formation of the next government. Pakistan has a long history of the military getting involved in politics.

With almost half of the votes counted, Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaf (PTI) party enjoyed a commanding lead.

The rigging allegations came after a suicide bombing in the southwestern city of Quetta, claimed by the Islamic State group, killed at least 31 people near a polling station, casting a shadow over voting day.

Appearing at the Atlantic Council, a United States think-tank, Ikram ul Majeed Sehgal chairman of the Pathfinder Group said the Pakistani army always had a major say in elections.

Sharif marked his ballot for both the National and Punjab provincial Parliaments and is contesting elections in four National Assembly seats and in two Punjab provincial legislature seats. Twitter is abuzz with congratulatory messages for Khan, who is PTI's prime ministerial candidate, but there are many who are already wary of a regime under him. "This is the resilience of this country and its people".

Rights activist Tahira Abdullah said Tuesday that local jirgas, or councils of elders, from 60 areas representing 16 different constituencies had signed agreements banning women from voting despite the new ruling. Musharraf has also said that Khan has never voiced any discontentment against India.

Mr Khan would need to win 141 of 272 seats to form his own government.

Thousands of Khan's supporters took to the streets to celebrate in Islamabad as news of a possible victory emerged.

Below the image, Hamilton wrote, "Guys, I'm on a plant-based diet and have been for a year now", adding that he feels " better than ever ." .

Khan has been an outspoken critic of the US-led war in neighbouring Afghanistan as well as China's massive investment in Pakistan, which has racked up millions of dollars in debt to Beijing.

"We totally reject this result. Now it's time to test out Imran".

An earlier attack in the province on Wednesday left one policeman dead and three wounded when a hand grenade was thrown at a polling station in the village of Koshk, in Khuzdar district.

"Nawaz has been dealt with unfairly just because he won't bow before the generals", Aslam said.

"We will not allow political victimisation of anyone happen".

The victor will face a crumbling economy and bloodshed by militants.

There are also questions over how successfully he can work with the army, and how much he would concede to the military in policy-making.

Imran upheld, "We have to work with our businesses, facilitate them so they are able to facilitate jobs".

Yet there have been widespread concerns during the election campaign about manipulation by the military, which has directly or indirectly ruled Pakistan for most of its existence.

Sharif, 68, was removed by presidential decree in 1993, in a military coup in 1999, and a year ago by the Supreme Court, which ordered his corruption trial.

Election officials reminded candidates their results will be nullified if the female voter turnout didn't reach 10 percent.
