However, due to the wide backlash inside the U.S. over President Donald Trump's remarks there, the White House announced earlier on Wednesday that the next meeting between Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will be delayed till next year.

In an unsuccessful bid to blunt some of the hostile questioning, particularly on Russia, Pompeo before the hearing issued a statement titled the "Crimea Declaration" in which he said the USA will continue to insist that Ukraine's territorial integrity be restored.

Trump said last week he would invite Putin to Washington for an autumn meeting, a daring rebuttal to fierce criticism over their summit in Helsinki, in which he appeared to give credence to the Russian leader's assertion that Moscow did not interfere in the 2016 US presidential election.

The White House said on Wednesday that President Trump wants to delay a planned follow-up meeting with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russian Federation until after the investigation of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, is concluded - which the White House predicted would be next year.

In recent days, Senate Republicans have made public remarks opposing a future meeting between Trump and Putin, which had been previewed by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders last week.

According to some reports, the Russians didn't exactly jump at the invitation for a second meeting so soon after the Helsinki, suggesting instead that Trump and Putin could meet again at the upcoming G-20 Summit in Argentina, which is scheduled to take place at the end of November.

"He has a complete and proper understanding of what happened", Pompeo said of Trump.

Just before his testimony, Pompeo issued a statement restating USA policy rejecting Russia's annexation of Crimea.

"The United States calls on Russian Federation to respect the principles to which it has long claimed to adhere and to end its occupation of Crimea", he said.

Mason asked, "President Putin, did you want President Trump to win the election and did you direct any of your officials to help him do that?"

Trump also insisted that he simply misspoke when he stated at a press conference with Putin in Helsinki that he didn't believe Russian Federation had meddled in the 2016 race.

Alphabet Stock Skyrockets on Stellar Earnings Despite $5 Billion E.U. Fine
On the face of it, the European Commission's massive fine hasn't really hurt Alphabet - at least not in the eyes of investors. The shares rose as much as 5.3 per cent, the most in nearly nine months, to US$1,275 at the market open in New York Tuesday.

Russia's foreign ministry tweeted in response: "We agree".

Pompeo, whom Democrats accused of playing politics with the investigation into the 2012 attack on US facilities in Benghazi, Libya, accused Menendez of pursuing a "political soliloquy" but then declined the opportunity to respond.

In a post-summit interview with Fox News, Putin said US-Russia relations should not be held "hostage" to "internal political games", referring to the Mueller probe. There will be no relief of Crimea-related sanctions until Russian Federation returns control of the Crimean Peninsula to Ukraine.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress have been clamoring for more sanctions on Russian Federation amid the uproar generated by Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki.

"The administration tells us, "Don't worry, be patient, there is a strategy here, '" Corker said".

Udall said he does trust Defense Secretary James Mattis and finds him a "calming figure" and widely respected.

"New Day" co-host Alisyn Camerota said Wednesday the White House had "changed reality" and "deleted" the question from the transcript.

As with the Putin summit, Trump met privately with Kim.

The White House says the omission "was by no means deliberate" and that the transcript has been updated for presidential records. In a Facebook posting, Maria Zakharova cited the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate accord - two Obama-era deals that Trump scrapped. They ought to be engaged in conversations, and they covered a wide range of topics.

Pompeo said the North Koreans continue to produce vessel material.
