Temperatures to PLUMMET this weekend after record breaking 37c HEAT

UK weather forecast

Stirling will stay dry but cloudy today, with intermittent heavy rain and thunderstorms developing on Saturday afternoon and sticking around on Sunday.

The Met Office said the heat and humidity will spark more thunderstorms later on Friday - which could spoil Britons' view of the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st Century.

The odd thunderstorm is expected over the Pennines today and although other areas of the north-west are set to see more heavy rain than thunder, yellow weather warnings are continuing to expand across the country.

The July record for the highest overnight minimum temperature is 23.3C - and the Met Office says that could be surpassed in south-east England on Thursday.

"Large hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards".

Where these thunderstorms do take place, torrential downpours with a much as 30 mm of rainfall in 1 hour and 60 mm in 3 hours could occur. However, many places will see much lower rainfall amounts.

"Lots of people heading out and away for the weekend, roads lie the M11, the A1, the M1, the M18 - a lot of surface water and spray on those roads, so allow some extra time for your journey".

Porthmadog in North Wales had held the record for the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching 33C (91.4F) on June 28.

There is now a 90 percent chance of heatwave conditions between Monday and Friday this week.

A high pollution warning was issued for London on Thursday, due to a mix of toxic air, extremely high temperatures, emissions from the continent and a lack of cloud.

Yellow warnings for rain have also been issued for Northern Ireland on Saturday, with thunder possible.

Fire brigades also called for a ban on BBQs in parks and drivers were urged not to throw rubbish following a string of grassland fires in recent weeks.
