India effectively strips 4M of citizenship in Assam

TMC and SP members protest NRC

The Complete Draft NRC with his photo states Paresh Baruah's birthplace as Chakalibhoria village (also known as Jeraigaon) in the Chabua area of upper Assam's Dibrugarh district and date of birth as February 15, 1957, the brother said.

The opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) today forced adjournment of proceedings in the Rajya Sabha till noon over the issue of non-inclusion of over 40 lakh people in Assam's National Register of Citizens.

"While a number of illegal immigrants may emerge through the NRC, there is no clarity on what happens after identification and prosecution: they can not be deported for there is no such arrangement between India and Bangladesh".

A high alert has also been sounded along the Assam-Bengal border after the final draft of the NRC was released on Monday, by the Assam government. The next NRC update will be on December 31.

The list featured over 2.89 crore names out of almost 3.29 crore applicants in Assam.

One of them is Nellie farmer Suban's son Nabi Hussain, 28, who said he has voted in two Indian elections but now fears arrests.

Paul Manafort believed he was above the law: United States prosecutor
FILE - Paul Manafort arrives for a hearing at US District Court on June 15, 2018 in Washington , DC. Prosecutors said Tuesday that Manafort hid 30 foreign bank accounts from U.S. authorities.

Mamata gave a befitting reply to the BJP leader Dilip Ghosh who stated that if the saffron party comes to power in West Bengal, they would send the Bangladeshis back.

Residents, including indigenous tribes, have clashed with both Hindu and Muslim settlers, whom they accuse of plundering resources and taking away jobs. "It seems that only Muslims - says director Ricken Patel - must go through such a complicated and unjust process, without the right to receive support and with the fear of having to leave if they lose".

The Assam Accord, which was signed between the government and the protesters, was able to bring a consensus on the eligibility criteria for citizenship. Hundreds of thousands of people fled what was then East Pakistan in the 1970s, most settling in Assam. "The government must move swiftly to resolve this crisis".

The chief minister also held talk with his Nagaland counterpart, who was well aware of the possible influx of people not listed in the NRC into the state. They can not be termed as non-citizens.

"In this regard, the court would like to observe that what has been published is a complete draft of NRC and it can't be the basis for any action by any authority", the SC recorded in its order. The state's BJP spokesman was not immediately available for comment, but India's home minister, Rajnath Singh, called the registration process impartial. "Thus, there is no question of anyone being put in a detention center after the publication of NRC". In parliament on Monday Singh told MPs that there would be no deportations based on the register and said there was no need to create "unnecessary panic". He has assured me that the government will not harass people.

The diplomat said the Supreme Court of India is monitoring the process. The issue has become a political flashpoint between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and opposition parties.
