Sam Curran rips through India but Virat Kohli remains after costly drops

I don't agree that one particular bowler might be able to target a certain batsman Broad

Match referee Jeff Crowe was seen in discussion with India captain Virat Kohli ahead of the third day's play of the first Test against England at Edgbaston on Friday.

But it is the suggestion that Kohli may have sworn in Root's direction that could land the India skipper in trouble with match referee Jeff Crowe, the former New Zealand captain.

It was a big occasion for Kohli as he was handed the Test captaincy due to the absence of MS Dhoni and the flamboyant batsman celebrated the occasion with a special knock.

"I am not sure [that Edgbaston is my best]".

"I had total clarity in my mind that we were going for the target. That was a handsome zone to be in".

Speaking after his Headingley innings, Root had admitted he "would not hear the end of it", adding that his own team-mates had been ribbing him incessantly for the gesture.

United is without a number of players after they were given extended breaks following the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation .

Kohli's superb shepherding of the tail took some of the gloss off what was an otherwise impressive performance from the England attack, particularly during a thrilling afternoon session. "It was hard, but I told myself that it's important to enjoy this and take it upon me as a challenge to take the team far and take the innings deep".

"It was a test of physical and mental strength but I am glad we could come close to their total and we are pretty much in the game".

Kambli recalled one of his ODI centuries back in 1996 and found similarities with the kind of celebration Kohli did on Thursday. 50-0 quickly became 59-3 as Curran took three wickets in eight balls, dismissing each of India's top three. Pandya then departed with the scoreboard reading 148/6 in 45.6 overs and Kohli was at 47 runs then.

Indian captain Virat Kohli lets out a scream after scoring his first century in England. I think it was an outstanding effort from them also.

It was the 11th time that Root had made a Test fifty since that Edgbaston hundred previous year without going on to three figures.

But Kohli hit back, taking advantage of being dropped twice in the slips with a magnificent 149 before being last man out - to the controversially recalled Adil Rashid - having taken India to within 13 runs of England. The skipper said he was disappointed at not being able to take a lead.
