Google Planning to Launch a Heavily Censored Search Engine in China

Report: Google's Plan to Launch Censored Search Engine in China Revealed

Google and other USA internet giants such as Facebook have made attempts to enter the lucrative Chinese market where the Great Firewall blocks access to their apps, website and services.

Google, which in 2010 left the search engine business in China, has recently been seeking ways of re-entering China where several products it has are blocked by Beijing regulators.

NGOs have criticised Google's reported plan to develop a censored version of its search engine in China, calling it an attack on internet freedom.

Facebook's website is also banned in China but the company has also signalled its interest to enter the market.

The news outlet says Google has been working on a project called Dragonfly since past year and has demonstrated a version of the censored search engine to Chinese officials. In essence, it will be blacklisting certain websites and search terms regarding democracy, human rights, religion, and more.

In a statement to The Verge, a Google spokesperson says the company doesn't comment on speculated future plans.

"Don't Be Evil, unless it's worth untold new riches", wrote Mother Jones national affairs editor Mark Follman in response to Gallagher's reporting, referencing Google's longstanding unofficial motto.

Google's search engine hasn't been available to most people in China since 2010.

Turkey says to retaliate against United States decision to impose sanctions over pastor
Anticipation of the US sanctions had already helped to send the Turkish lira to an all-time low against the dollar on Wednesday. Washington sanctioned Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu over the pastor's detention.

The company made a decision to quicken the development of a censored search service after Pichai met with top government official Wang Huning in December 2017, the Intercept reported.

The Intercept also said that the Chinese search app was being tailored for the Google-backed Android operating system for mobile devices. Poon told The Intercept that if Google launches a censored version of its search engine it will "set a awful precedent" for other companies.

The New York Times said its report was based on information provided to it by two people - who spoke on condition of anonymity - with knowledge of Google's plans.

China infamously maintains extensive censorship of the internet with strict legislation in place to regulate domestic internet usage.

The internet in China is heavily censored, with the country's so-called Great Firewall stopping citizens from accessing many foreign websites. "I'm committed to engaging more in China", he said. In addition, The Information reported that Google is developing a compliant Chinese news aggregation app as well. Due to the censorship related issue, the tech giant Google was reluctant to launch its services in China.

- Josh Rogin (@joshrogin) August 1, 2018 If Google goes through with this and launches a censored search engine in China, effectively normalizing and Americanizing authoritarian censorship, this will be the Waterloo in the global battle for a free internet as a norm.

The app would censor search queries and results in compliance with China's Golden Shield Project, better known in the West at the Great Firewall of China.
