Pompeo says Iran sanctions will be enforced

State-owned IranAir ordered 200 aircraft from Western companies after Tehran signed a nuclear pact with major world powers in 2015.

Washington made a decision to reimpose sanctions and has told other countries they must halt all imports of Iranian oil from November 4 or face us financial measures.

Trump's move to scupper the nuclear accord in May was widely condemned by co-signatories to the deal, including US allies like Germany and France who continue to seek pathways by which they can continue pursuing trade relations with Tehran, in spite of the new sanctions.

Trump's offer for dialogue came after Pompeo seemed to suggest support for a change in Iran leadership, telling an audience of Iranian expats in California that the regime had been a "nightmare".

Sporadic protests were taking place in cities in Iran for a fourth day, with demonstrators attacking a Shi'ite seminary west of Tehran, according to Iranian news agencies and social media on Saturday, as Iranians brace for a return of USA sanctions. "They have got to behave like a normal country", he said, describing Iranian leaders as "bad actors".

So, without any direct negotiations happening, how do Iran and the US ever get anything done?

European nations have been working to salvage the Iran deal by shielding investments in Iran with subsidies. Representatives of the administration trump says that the sanctions resume "in an attempt to change the behavior of the Iranian regime".

China imports more oil from Iran than any other nation.

ATR, jointly owned by European consortium Airbus and Italy's Leonardo, has been pushing USA officials to allow it to finish its delivery of aircraft to Iran.

Sporadic protests broke out in several cities in Iran for a fifth night on Saturday, a day after demonstrators attacked a Shiite seminary, according to Iranian news agencies and social media.

Speaking to reporters aboard his plane on his way home from Asia, Pompeo says Monday's re-imposition of sanctions is an important pillar in US policy toward Iran. Sanctions on trade in Iranian metals and automobiles go back into effect Monday.

He later said in a message on Twitter that the United States was "deeply concerned about reports of Iranian regime's violence against unarmed citizens" and urged respect for human rights. Authorities reported the first fatality among protesters, with the shooting of a man in Karaj, west of Tehran.

The president also issued an all-caps threat to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani last month, warning him not to threaten the US or "YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE".
