Iran's Hassan Rouhani hits out at US sanctions as 'psychological warfare'

The Trump administration moved to restore some United States sanctions on Iran and reaffirmed plans to impose tougher penalties on the country's oil sales in November, as President Hassan Rouhani comes under increasing economic and political pressure to address the crisis.

Senior US officials said at a briefing on Monday that the plan was to increase economic pressure on Tehran to have "an exponential effect on Iran's already fragile economy".

The United States has reimposed economic sanctions on Iran that were originally put in place to pressure the country to limit its nuclear program and later lifted under a 2015 global agreement.

Iran is accusing the USA of reneging on the nuclear agreement, signed by the Obama administration, and of causing recent Iranian economic unrest.

Most Iranians have tuned out the endless United States hostility, with which they have lived for four decades, so their anger is mostly directed at their own leaders. "We can already see positive results from what Trump did".

White House national security adviser John Bolton said on Monday Iran's only chance of escaping sanctions would be to take up an offer to negotiate with Trump for a tougher deal.

European Union officials, however, were quoted on Monday as saying that a number of other countries had asked them for details on the blocking regulations as they also explore ways to bypass sanctions.

"The Iranian regime faces a choice", Mr. Trump said in a statement. "Our stated policy is not to bring about regime change but to change behavior of the regime", said one of the officials.

In a speech hours before the sanctions were due to take effect, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani rejected any negotiations as long as Washington was no longer complying with the deal it reached three years ago.

China threatens new tariffs on $60 billion of USA goods
The People's Bank of China stepped in to support the yuan on Friday after the currency slid to the lowest in more than year. In negotiations with China, Trump's major request was a massive reduction in the bilateral trade deficit .

"The E.U.is morally bankrupt, and we need to remember that next time they try to lecture us", Mr. Erdan told Israel Radio.

Iranian authorities recently also arrested 45 people, including the Central Bank's deputy chief, as part of a crackdown on financial fraud, according to judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi.

Asked about threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, Mr Bolton said that would be Iran's "worst mistake yet".

In early 2016, Daimler established a joint venture with Iranian vehicle manufacturer and dealer Iran Khodro Co to make and distribute Mercedes-Benz trucks in the country.

He said the USA has long designated Iran as the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism.

The impact of the return of sanctions has ramped up tension inside Iran, which has seen days of protests and strikes in multiple towns and cities over water shortages, high prices and wider anger at the political system.

US trade with Iran stood at $258 million (Dh948m) in 2016, according to the US Census Bureau, while exports to Iran from the European Union, which will be affected by secondary sanctions, were worth $13 billion a year ago.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, like Trump a long-time opponent of the accord, congratulated him on the new sanctions.
