United Nations chief condemns Saudi killing of Yemeni children

Saudi-led coalition air strikes on bus carrying children in Yemen leaves 'dozens' dead

An attack on a bus carrying children in rebel-held northern Yemen on Thursday left dozens of people dead or wounded, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

"A hospital supported by our team in Yemen received the bodies of 29 children under the age of 15 and 48 wounded, including 30 children", the ICRC said on Twitter.

"Today's attack in Saada was a legitimate military operation ... and was carried out in accordance with global humanitarian law", the coalition said in the Arabic-language statement carried by SPA.

The UN children's agency UNICEF said it was "very concerned with the initial reports of children being killed".

The coalition entered Yemen's civil war more than three years ago to fight northern Houthi rebels who seized power away from Yemen's internationally recognized government.

The missile was sacked from Amran province in northern Yemen on Wednesday night, the coalition said in a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency.

Last week, Yemeni medical officials said the coalition conducted airstrikes in the rebel-held port city of Hodeida, killing at least 28 people and wounding 70.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki told AFP that claims by aid organisations that children were inside the bus were "misleading", adding that the bus carried "Huthi combatants".

Houthi media broadcast graphic footage appearing to show the dead bodies of children. It also said the missile was launched "deliberately to target residential and populated areas".

Turki al-Malki said the attack was "a legitimate military action, conducted in conformity with global humanitarian law".

The United States is helping the coalition, the only party in the conflict to use war planes, with refueling, intelligence, and billions in weapons sales.

The Saudi-led coalition is fighting to defeat Houthi rebels who expelled the Yemeni government from the capital and took control of vast swathes of the country.

The alliance says it does not intentionally target civilians and has set up a committee to probe alleged mass casualty air strikes, which has mostly cleared the coalition of any blame.

Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, Ambassador of Yemen to the USA and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reportedly said Iran was able to increase "its military and financial support for the Houthi rebels in Yemen" following the implementation of the JCPOA under former President Barack Obama.

The Houthis have launched a series of missile strikes on the kingdom, including the capital, Riyadh, over the past year.

The coalition denied responsibility for those attacks.

Impoverished Yemen, on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is now in the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with more than 22.2 million people in need of assistance.

After today's strike, Lise Grande, United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, urged all parties to come to the table.
