Andy Murray trolls Nick Kyrgios over umpire controversy, fans love it

8 bizarre Nick Kyrgios meltdowns

Nick Kyrgios' intensely freaky mid-match pep talk from umpire Mohamed Lahyani has copped an absolute pasting from media pundits and tennis personalities alike, after the official left his chair during Kyrgios' second round matchup against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Breaks for 3-2 in the second set and 2-1 in the third put Federer on route to victory, his 18th in 18 second round appearances in the second round.

Chair umpires are never made available to the media, but tournament referee Brian Earley said Lahyani explained umpire Mohamed Lahyani left his perch "to make sure he could communicate effectively" with Kyrgios in a noisy arena.

However, the match created a huge storm after respected umpire Mohamed Lahyani lost patience with the under-performing 30th seed and climbed down from his chair to tell the Australian, trailing by a set and 3-0, to try harder. The only thing he can tell him is, "pay attention because if you continue like this I'm going to give you a warning', something like this".

"I want to help you". "I've seen your matches: you're great for tennis. I know this is not you".

Seeking some sort of physical treatment, Kyrgios responded to Lahyani: "Okay". "But I get what he was trying to do". It was not just about how you're feeling, 'Oh, I am not feeling well'.

The 20 time grand slam victor Roger Federer has condemned US Open officials and says a repeat of Flushing Meadows' umpiring farce "won't happen" in his weekend showdown with Australian Nick Kyrgios. "Look. I wasn't feeling good".

That decision could have serious implications for Morrison's government, which has a parliamentary majority of only one seat. The new minister for Defence Industry will be Steven Ciobo.

Like Federer, Herbert insisted that Lahyani had over-stepped the mark and said he would meet the official over the issue.

It all seemed like an impromptu intervention for the mercurial Kyrgios, right out there on Court 17 at Flushing Meadows, and it raised questions about whether Lahyani overstepped his duties as someone who's primarily there to keep score and keep order.

Asked after the match what the umpire was saying to him when he trailed by a set and a break, Kyrgios said: "He was just concerned about how I was playing, like, 'Nick are you OK?'" I wasn't really listening to him, but I knew it wasn't a good look.

Of course we have seen this from Kyrgios before, but it's what happened next that really caused controversy.

The umpiring furore has overshadowed what shapes as the match of the first week between Federer and Kyrgios, who have already engaged in three memorable encounters - all decided in third-set tiebreakers. I didn't listen to what they said.

"She played the game I should have played", said two-time runner-up Wozniacki who has endured a Grand Slam letdown since winning in Australia. "I can't think of one", Ings tweeted. I don't think he's a coach.

Federer joined a chorus of past and present tennis icons in condemning Layhani's actions that coincided with a swing in Kyrgios' topsy-turvy four-set win over Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
