Ex-Trump campaign aide jailed in Russian Federation probe

Papadopoulos lawyers released a memo on Friday seeking a reduced jail sentence for their client lying to the FBI when interviewed in January 2017

A former Trump adviser at the centre of a United States inquiry into possible collusion with Russian Federation has been sentenced to 14 days in jail for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mueller's team hadn't taken a position on what precise sentence should be imposed, but had argued the sentencing guidelines called for up to six months in prison and that Papadopoulos' crime warranted incarceration. He was the first to plead guilty in Mueller's probe and is now the first Trump campaign adviser to be sentenced. "4 days for $28 MILLION - $2 MILLION a day", he wrote on Twitter, an apparent, if inflated, estimation of the Russian Federation investigation's cost. "A great day for America!" the president tweeted.

The defense portrayed him as a young, eager Donald Trump supporter who landed his job as a campaign foreign policy adviser "despite having no experience with US and Russian diplomacy".

WASHINGTON ― The first Trump campaign adviser arrested in Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election was sentenced to 14 days in prison on Friday afternoon. When Papadopoulos met Trump for the first time, at a March 2016 meeting of the campaign's foreign policy team, he mentioned this proposal to the room.

They allege Papadopoulos thwarted an ongoing national security investigation and contributed to them losing track of Joseph Mifsud, the professor who knew about the "dirt" on Hillary Clinton, before they could effectively question him. Mifsud introduced him to others who ostensibly had connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin - including a woman who claimed to be Putin's niece.

"It wasn't an offer", he said Friday night, denying that Mifsud had dangled the possibility of funneling the emails to the Trump campaign.

In asking the court for leniency, Papadopoulos said he made "a bad mistake, for which I have paid a awful price, and am deeply ashamed", and that he was motivated to lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation try to "create distance between the issue, myself, and the president". In that testimony, Sessions said he resisted the idea of any Russian Federation meeting proposed by Papadopoulos. Papadopoulos told CNN in a late Friday interview that Trump "gave me a sort of a nod" and "wasn't committed either way" at that meeting - but that Sessions "was actually enthusiastic" about a Trump-Putin gathering.

Papadopoulos admitted a year ago that he lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about interactions in which people he thought were linked to the Russian government described Moscow having "thousands of emails" containing damaging information about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. His reaction was that Mifsud "was simply repeating gossip and rumors", Papadopoulos said.

"All I can say is, my recollection differs from Sen". "As far as I remember, I absolutely did not share this information with anyone on the campaign".

Weeks later, stolen Clinton emails were leaked over the internet by what USA intelligence chiefs now say were Russian intelligence actors.

Papadopoulos apologized for his actions, telling a judge that he had made a "dreadful mistake" and was eager for redemption. "I was young and ambitious and excited". His lawyer Tom Breen said that at the time, Papadopoulos was naive and acted on what he told the court was a "misguided loyalty" to Trump, who had been inaugurated as president just one week before. His client was also affected by Trump's cries of "fake news" and his casting of the Russian Federation investigation as a "witch hunt" just days before his FBI interview.

Trump "hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever did", Breen said.

Instead, he sentenced Papadopoulos to spend 14 days in prison and another year under the supervision of a probation officer, and required him to perform 200 hours of community service.

The documentary traces Papadopoulos' travels around the globe, his interactions with shadowy figures in the intelligence world, and how he got caught up in the Russian Federation investigation. He hopes to be excused from probation immediately after the sentencing because of the last 13 months he's spent since his arrest, his memo said.
