Why umpires are 'fearful' after Serena Williams meltdown

TWITTER

U.S. Open victor Naomi Osaka is reportedly set to sign the biggest deal Adidas has ever made with a female athlete, after the tennis star defeated 23-time Grand Slam singles victor Serena Williams in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Ramos, 47, is the only active tennis umpire to have officiated the men's singles finals at all four Grand Slams.

Many officials were also left angry with the fact that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) took almost 48 hours to defend Ramos, on Monday (Sept 10) afternoon, by which time the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and United States Tennis Association (USTA) had supported Williams' claims of sexism after she was given a game penalty for her behaviour during her defeat by Naomi Osaka.

"Growing up, my dad drove a Nissan, so being able to be a brand ambassador now, it feels like I've come full circle", Osaka said at a contract signing event at Nissan's headquarters in Yokohama.

"He needed to tell Serena - he can't apologise he did the right thing there, he can't apologise, he's got to be the boss - but all he had to say to Serena is "I am not attacking your character".

"Because it was my first final and my first Grand Slam victory, overall I felt really happy and I know that I accomplished a lot".

"At the time, I did ... think that they were booing at me".

The Women's Tennis Association made a similar argument, claiming that men and women professional tennis players are treated differently by umpires.

Hurricane Florence evacuations expand, with 'disaster at doorstep'
So we could have two landfalls - one around Wilmington and then one near Myrtle Beach or even south of there. You're going to be displaced from your home in the coastal areas.

Williams was fined $17,000 for the rules violations, and the International Tennis Federation backed Ramos, saying his "decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules".

Williams later smashed her racket and was docked a game for an outburst at Ramos stemming from her anger over the initial violation. "She's awesome. just a wonderful woman and a human being".

"While I was playing the U.S. Open and Kei (Nishikori) was doing well".

"It's an unhappy situation but "à la carte" refereeing doesn't exist". "They are all fearful that they could be the next Ramos".

For the first time since the match, Ramos has spoken up, telling Tribuna Expresso in his native Portugal that "I'm fine, given the circumstances".

"You're stressing me out", Osaka quipped, somewhat sheepishly.

Ramos will next umpire at the U.S. -Croatia Davis Cup semi-final in Zadar, Croatia this weekend.

Ings, ESPN reported, added that such a protest was "unlikely" because umpires have no fraternal organization or union.
