May tells rebels - It's my Brexit deal or no deal

Chequers is much worse than status quo, says Boris Johnson

London mayor Sadiq Khan has called for another referendum on Britain's European Union membership, saying the prime minister's handling of Brexit negotiations had become "mired in confusion and deadlock" and was leading the country down a damaging path.

"I am very surprised that the prime minister triggered Article 50 and started the United Kingdom down this very tight timetable to have a Brexit plan before she had a plan", he said.

"I think that the alternative to that will be not having a deal", May told BBC TV, adding she was confident of getting a good agreement she thought parliament would ultimately approve.

Speaking to the Financial Times, she said: "They are not capable of governing. We're either going to have a general election in the autumn or we're going to have it in the spring..."

The former foreign secretary doubled down on his criticism of Mrs May in his weekly Telegraph column on Sunday, saying she was leading Britain toward a "spectacular political vehicle crash".

Mr Johnson has always been critical of Mrs May's Chequers plan, resigning in July alongside then-Brexit Secretary David Davis.

May, the centre-right Conservative Party's leader, said she was focused on securing a Brexit deal rather than her own future, in a BBC television interview out Sunday.

It showed that most trade between the United Kingdom mainland and Northern Ireland was everyday movement of goods for high-street stores rather than major shipments of produce carried out by large companies.

Storm Helene expected to bring 85mph winds across Wirral
The National Hurricane Center is predicting the storm will produce "catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding". The storm is located about 1,350 miles south-southwest of the Azores, and it is moving north-northwest at 14 mph.

"That's what I'm focused on and that's what I think we should all be focused on".

The IMF said there was a "daunting" range of issues still to be dealt with before Brexit.

The problem she faces is that any agreement based on keeping close trading ties to the bloc puts her on a collision course with hard-line eurosceptics in her Conservative Party - and could trigger a leadership challenge by Mr Boris Johnson. However, it is notable that Liam Fox ( the Trade Secretary) and Michael Gove (the Environment Secretary) have both voiced their support for May.

"They have understood that Britain is serious that if we don't get a good deal we could end up with no deal", he told Sky News television.

Mr Johnson has backed proposals by the pro-Brexit European Research Group that physical checks can be done away from the border, without keeping the United Kingdom or Northern Ireland tied to EU customs rules.

He ruled out extending the negotiation process - Britain is due to leave at the end of March 2019 - saying such a move would effectively allow the European Union "to dictate when Britain will leave".

"I think Parliament will vote for a deal because I think people will see the importance of a deal that maintains a good trading relationship with the European Union but also maintains good cooperation in other areas, but gives us the freedom to take the benefits and opportunities of Brexit", she said in an interview broadcast Monday.
