'Very sad thing' if Saudi crown prince involved in journalist's disappearance

Jamal Khashoggi's alleged murder in Saudi consulate in Turkey has put Trump administration in a delicate spot

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he would seek punitive economic sanctions against Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other officials in the kingdom if a formal U.S. investigation shows they were involved in killing Jamal Khashoggi. "And they should be cooperating with us".

Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Bob Corker says he has reviewed USA intelligence reports suggesting that Khashoggi was killed on October 2, the day he went to the consulate.

Many renowned USA intellectuals also called on the Trump administration to pressure the Saudi government to shed light on the Khashoggi case.

She added: "We don't have the facts yet".

Mr Khashoggi was visiting the consulate to finalise his divorce so he could marry his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

"I think that would be hurting us", Trump said. "This is a bad situation".

"Nobody knows what happened", he said. "We can't let this happen". Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) sent a letter to Trump demanding that the USA impose sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act on any "foreign person responsible for such a violation related to Mr. Khashoggi".

"Saudi Arabia has never been a bastion for press freedom", Radsch said, but added that Trump's repeated cries of "fake news" and "enemy of the people" have made life unsafe for reporters around the globe. "Before I discuss this I'd have to find out what happened", he said.

While no suspects were named, and the lawmakers' letter to the president is only a preliminary step toward taking punitive action, it marked a departure from decades of close U.S. -Saudi relations that have only intensified under Trump.

The Washington Post printed a blank column in its newspaper on October 5, in solidarity with Khashoggi titled "A missing voice" and called on Crown Prince Salman to ensure he "is free and able to continue his work". Saudi power is now more concentrated, more brutal, more impatient, more impetuous - and more confident that it can act as it sees fit thanks to the embrace of Mr Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

A rep for WWE released a statement to the media saying, "We are now monitoring the situation".

From there, the.234 hitter never had to lift the bat off his shoulder, with Severino missing badly for balls three and four. Severino comes into this one off a decent performance in the wild-card game against the A's.

Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy on Thursday called for the administration to cease military support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, citing reports that Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Turkey.

"I think they did it and I think unfortunately he's deceased", Corker said, according to The Hill.

After Khashoggi's fiance wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post, pleading for Trump and his wife Melania's help, the president said that the first lady's office was working on inviting her to the White House. Trump visited Saudi Arabia on his first global trip as president and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales.

Saudi Arabia has called the allegations "baseless" and said that Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, but didn't offer any evidence.

A demonstrator holds picture of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a protest in front of Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, October 5, 2018.

The president pointed out that Khashoggi is not an American and the incident did not happen in the United States.

"I would not be in favor of stopping a country from spending $110 billion - which is an all-time record - and letting Russian Federation have that money and letting China have that money", Trump told reporters, referring to an arms deal he signed with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his maiden trip to Saudi Arabia a year ago.

Nevertheless, the Post's report raises questions about what duty US intelligence agencies may have had to warn Khashoggi that he was in danger, if they did know of a plot to capture him.

The president did not provide details on a USA investigation. "I don't trust them one bit". "But I don't want to rush to judgment", Corker said on Tuesday.

In an interview Wednesday, Pence said the U.S.is "ready to assist in anyway" in response to questions about sending Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.

A bipartisan group of USA senators is forcing the Trump administration to investigate the disappearance of a Saudi journalist, triggering a human rights probe that could result in sanctions against Saudi officials and entities. Twelve of them arrived early on Tuesday, based on photos captured at passport control which it published.
