Candice Warner on 'hurtful' sledge that prompted David Warner's walk-off

David Warner

The disgraced former Test vice-captain was banned from representing Australia for 12 months and will never be allowed to hold a leadership position again for his role in this year's Cape Town ball-tampering scandal.

Batting for Randwick-Petersham against Western Suburbs, Warner walked off the field while on 35 after an apparent sledge from Jason Hughes - the brother of deceased batsman Phil.

When asked by Peter FitzSimons whether it was Jason's comments that caused the walk-off, Warner said: "yes".

David Warner's wife has leapt to his defence after an ugly on-field sledge saw him storm off the cricket pitch.

On Sunday morning Warner's wife Candice said the suspended Test batsman left the field because he was concerned where the "very hurtful" comments could lead.

Sportingnews reporter Brendan Banford, who was at the match, reported Warner told the umpire "I'm removing myself from the game" because of a sledge from the fielders.

Warner, who turned 32 on Saturday, soon continued his innings and made 114 not out for Randwick-Petersham against Western Suburbs.

But Trump's aides have reportedly warned that Russian spies are "routinely eavesdropping" on his calls, the report said. Trump regularly speaks in hopes of using them to influence the president", the Times reported.

Cricket Australia director Mark Taylor also shared his thoughts on the story as a panellist on Sports Sunday.

"Everyone has their opinion but I think there is a difference between sledging and abuse".

"I'm not going to get into what was said, but yesterday went too far".

Warner and Hughes both denied to comment at the end of the day's play on Saturday. It is a terrific game, but I can't get over how many people are talking it down at the moment and gee it really worries me.

"I think he removed himself because he first of all didn't like what he was hearing and where that could have been taken. It was hurtful, very hurtful".

Two reviews prompted by the scandal - one focusing on the culture within Cricket Australia and the other into the team - are due to be released on Monday.

The three Test players were banned for their roles in attempting to tamper with the ball during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, found out after Bancroft was caught using sandpaper and putting it down his trousers on the ground's big screen.
