Asian stocks slide after Wall Street losses, Nissan arrest

Apple experienced the biggest loss of the group, dropping almost 5 percent after Goldman Sachs cut it's price on the stock for the second time in a week amid concerns over lack of demands for the company's latest line of iPhones.

The S&P energy index rose 1.6 per cent as oil prices steadied after a 6 per cent plunge on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 551.80 points, or 2.2 percent, to 24,465.64.

The Nasdaq composite skidded 219 points, or 3 percent, to 7,028.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks soared 19.27 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,488.28.

The Dow was down roughly 650 points at its session low, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both dropped more than two percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly fell 500 points. Boeing gave up 4.5 percent to $320.94, but is still one of the best-performing stocks in the 30-stock index.

The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index fell eight points to 60 in November.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 2.77-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.91-to-1 ratio favored advancers.The S&P 500 posted six new 52-week highs and three new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 14 new highs and 84 new lows.

PG&E stock fell 4.7 percent to $23.26. The company recently announced it would no longer disclose unit sales of its iPhones.

Nissan fell over 5 per cent in Asia as traders there got their first chance to react to the news that its chairman, Carlos Ghosn, who engineered a turnaround at the automaker, was arrested on charges he underreported his income and misused company funds and will be fired.

All eyes were on Apple, whose shares were down 3 percent to trade at $180.07, adding to previous losses amid reports of weakened iPhone demand.

Oil prices climbed after USA government data showed strong demand for gasoline and diesel, though gains were limited by concern over rising crude supply. The company said sales broke out of a slump and prices also rose.

Most of the FAANG members saw their stock prices rose on Wednesday, as Amazon and Facebook leading the gainers with a 2.5-per cent increase.

This pressured the broader tech sector as Microsoft and Twitter also joined the retreat, while Amazon curbed losses.

Wholesale gasoline rose 0.4% to $1.58 a gallon. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 3.07 per cent from 3.04 per cent.

In Europe, Germany's DAX index lost 1.6 percent and France's CAC 40 shed 1.2 percent. The pound extended its gains to $1.2880 from $1.2879, on news that Britain and the European Union had reached a deal in principle on future relations.

CURRENCIES: The dollar was flat at 112.95 yen. The euro edged up to $1.1403 from $1.1399. Gold gained 0.6 per cent to $1,228 an ounce.
