Ukraine President imposes ‘MARTIAL LAW’ after Russian Federation opens fire on ships

Russia blocks passage in Kerch Strait Near Crimea, Deploys Su-25 Jets And Ka-52 Attack Helicopters.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has demanded the immediate return of the country's sailors and ships, calling the FSB's actions a violation of worldwide law.

Ukraine's Parliament voted to introduce martial law which will come into effect on Wednesday, November 28 and has been proposed to be in place for at least 30 days.

"The National Security and Defense Council's decision concerning "emergency measures to ensure Ukraine's state sovereignty and independence and declare martial law in Ukraine" is hereby enacted", President Pyotr Poroshenko announced on his website.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in an earlier statement Russia's actions were a violation of the UN Charter and global law, and pledged to "promptly inform our partners about Russia's aggressive actions".

The United Nations Security Council is due to discuss the developments on Monday at the request of Russia, said Deputy Russian UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy.

Video footage from the clash, obtained and released by Arsen Avakov, the Ukrainian minister of internal affairs, appears to show the exact moment a suspected Russian ship slams into the side of a Ukrainian tugboat in the shallow waters between Russia and the Ukraine.

The Ukrainian navy says Russian ships fired on and seized three of its artillery ships Sunday. Russian media say three were injured.

The Ukrainian vessels apparently wanted to travel through the strait to other ports in Ukraine.

Dominique Arel, an expert in Ukrainian studies at the University of Ottawa, said the chances of the West taking military action are slim, just the likelihood of further sanctions might be.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned "this aggressive Russian action" in a statement calling for Russia to return the Ukrainian vessels and release the detained seamen.

Russian seizure of Ukrainian naval ships off Crimea sparks alarm

Poroshenko also said Ukraine would stick to the Minsk Agreements, peace deals his government inked with Russia and pro-Russian separatists in southeastern Ukraine that were created to stop a war that claimed more than 10,000 lives since 2014.

The Kerch Strait is the only passage into the Sea of Azov beyond it.

Most present were members of the Ukrainian community in Warsaw, protesting against Russia's seizure of three Ukrainian vessels off the disputed Crimean Peninsula.

There is a practical problem with the proposal as well: the Azov Sea is simply too shallow.

The Russian foreign ministry went further in its statement, saying that the attempt at "provoking a conflict with Russia" was carried out by Ukraine "in coordination with the United States and the European Union".

Russia's Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, told Russian news agencies Sunday after the first incident that the Ukrainian ships held their course and violated Russian territorial waters.

Part 1, Article 36 of the UN Convention states that in the straits referred to in Article 37 of the UN Convention, all ships and aircraft shall enjoy the right of transit passage which shall not be obstructed.

All of this unfolded after three Ukrainian ships set sail from Odessa on their way to Mariupol, renewing tensions near Crimea, a region that Russian Federation annexed in 2014.

Kiev is also strengthened by the knowledge that most Western governments, especially Washington, lean towards Ukraine and are liable to view Russia's version of events with some scepticism.

Trofimov cited the 2003 treaty between Russia and Ukraine which declared the Azov Sea to be "internal waters" and which only guarantees freedom of navigation for Russian and Ukrainian military vessels.
