General Motors to slash 14,700 jobs in North America

GM to Close 8 Plants, Lay Off Close to 15,000 Workers

President Trump said Monday he's pressuring the CEO of General Motors to open a new factory in OH quickly following the automaker's announcement of plant closings in the Midwest, a business decision that could complicate the president's re-election bid.

Four factories in the USA and one in Canada could be shuttered by the end of 2019 if the automaker and its unions don't come up with an agreement to allocate more work to those facilities, GM said in a statement Monday.

GM will jettison the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6 sedans next year. Production has accordingly been halted as part of GM's plan to save $6 billion annually in the coming years.

About 6,000 factory workers could lose jobs in the United States and Canada, although some could transfer to truck plants.

The Lordstown plant became a target in the restructuring as its lone product, the Chevy Cruze sedan variant, has faced drastically plummeting sales over the last calendar year. We tried to get his attention on this issue two years ago.

"We just want American cars made in America".

Five GM vehicle plants are operating at 37 percent capacity, according to the Center for Automotive Research.

"They better damn well open a new plant there very quickly", he told the WSJ afterward, claiming that he told GM CEO Mary Barra in a phone call last night "you're playing around with the wrong person".

Clashing with Trump, US government report says climate change will batter economy
Earlier this week, the United States president appeared to deride the idea of climate change in a tweet about the weather. The report was initially set to be released in December.

The company has marked a sedan plant in Detroit, a compact auto plant in OH, and another assembly plant outside Toronto for possible closure. GM had been expected to close plants because of struggling sales.

Part of the cuts for GM include 8,000 salaried jobs, among them 25 percent of the company's executives, making it the largest cutbacks since the company went bankrupt and was bailed out by taxpayers during the 2008 financial crisis. Some of the affected factories could resume production, depending on the outcome of the company's contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union next year.

"GM owes the community answers on how the rest of the supply chain will be impacted and what consequences its disastrous decision will have on the Mahoning Valley and our state", he said in the press release. The company said those moves, along with another at a Canada-based factory, are aimed at cutting costs.

Barra is reducing staff from operations that make conventional cars and hiring people who can design electric cars or add software prowess to GM Cruise, the automaker's autonomous vehicle unit in San Francisco.

Months later, though, Trump imposed new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum that increased prices for many American manufacturers, including carmakers.

Barra said the move leaves GM to focus on the future.

In a statement, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan described the news as "troubling" and said that the city's economic development team and the UAW union are "working together to come up with a solution that works for GM and the employees".

Moving forward, Green said the Lordstown plant will be in competition with other threatened plants and new plants in hopes of obtaining a new GM product to produce. Some US workers would transfer to truck and SUV plants where GM is increasing output, the company said.
