Ebola outbreak in DR Congo is second worst in history

The latest outbreak is the tenth in DR Congo since Ebola was first detected there in 1976

Day by day, reports by health organisations note one new difficulty after another in this latest outbreak, even as their work sets milestones that have given new hope in the fight against one of the world's most notorious diseases.

This put the total cases over the 2000 Uganda outbreak (425) to become the second largest Ebola outbreak since it was "discovered" in 1976, only behind the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak where 28,000 people were infected and some 11,000 died.

'While our focus remains on bringing this outbreak to an end, the launch of the randomised control trial is an important step toward finally finding an Ebola treatment that will save lives, ' said World Health Organization director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The organization's emergencies chief, Dr. Peter Salama, quoted by AP, called it a "sad toll" following Congo's health ministry announcement that the number of cases reached 426, of which includes 379 confirmed cases and 47 probable ones.

This Ebola outbreak is like no other, with some health workers comparing the region to a war zone. Ebola cases have also been recorded in neighboring Ituri province.

The epidemic disease is believed to have killed more 245 people, spread across 14 health zones with 426 cases of infection.

It's not clear how many people from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are tackling the outbreak from Congo's capital, almost 1,000 miles away.

Insecurity in the east of the country has affected the Ebola response.

Another 74 suspected cases are under investigation.

The outbreak has been plagued by security problems, with health workers attacked by rebels in districts where the virus has been spreading.

"No other epidemic in the world has been as complex as the one we are now experiencing", the Congolese health minister, Dr. Oly Ilunga Kalenga, said in a November 9 statement.

Salama this month predicted that the outbreak in northeastern Congo will last at least another six months before it can be contained. "We fear that hundreds more people will lose their life in this outbreak", Gayer said in her statement Thursday. "We will not rest until this outbreak is finished".

The best pre-trip travel advice often comes from a certified healthcare provider, who can discuss each person's medications, medicine, and vaccination needs.

This is what happened in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, when people with malaria were filling Ebola treatment centres during the West African outbreak in 2014, he said.
