Will Turkey push for United Nations probe into Khashoggi murder?

U.S. senators more certain than ever Saudi crown prince was behind Khashoggi killing

Reasonable observers and analysts concluded weeks ago that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the gruesome killing of Washington Post journalist and US resident Jamal Khashoggi.

In his bid to pressure the Trump administration to condemn the Crown Prince, Senator Graham said there may not be a "smoking gun", but that there was a "smoking saw", a reference to a bone saw that investigators said was used to cut up Khashoggi's body. Pompeo said there was "no direct reporting" connecting the crown prince to the murder, and Mattis said there was "no smoking gun" making the connection.

Graham has also pushed for the Magnitsky Act sanctions issued against the 15 assassins to be extended to the crown prince as well.

The sharp response from prominent Senate Republicans will increase the pressure on President Trump, who has defended the crown prince and the USA relationship with Saudi Arabia. Khashoggi walked into the Saudi consulate in Turkey on October 2 and never walked out.

Director of the CIA Gina Haspel has agreed to brief a "small group" of Senate leaders about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to the chair of the Senate foreign relations committee, Senator Bob Corker.

Pompeo and Mattis tried to dissuade senators from punishing Saudi Arabia with the resolution, saying USA involvement in the Yemen conflict is central to the Trump administration's broader goal of containing Iranian influence in the Middle East.

This is completely contrary to the narrative that has been put forward by President Donald Trump and his Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. Senators have moved to punish Saudi Arabia by advancing legislation to curtail US backing for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

Sen. Bob Corker says a jury would find the Saudi crown prince 'in about 30 minutes.'

He minced no words afterwards, saying he believes Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is "a wrecking ball" who is "complicit in the murder of Mr Khashoggi to the highest level possible".

CIA Director Gina Haspel addressed an audience in Louisville, Ky., Sept. 24.

Trump has repeatedly cast doubts over the U.S. intelligence agency's assessment, however, while Saudi officials have repeatedly denied that the crown prince had any knowledge of Khashoggi's murder or its subsequent cover-up.

"I think the reason they don't draw the conclusion that he's complicit, is because the administration doesn't want to go down that road, not because there's not evidence to suggest he's complicit", he said. Asked if he would be convicted of murder, Corker replied "Yes".

Haspel's testimony has been regarded as key by senators sitting on the fence about condemning the Saudi leader, since it was she who traveled to Ankara to hear the recording by Turkish intelligence of Khashoggi's last moments.

Graham said he would not vote for the Yemen resolution.

"You can't chop up a guy in a consulate, particularly who's an American resident who's an opinion journalist for The Washington Post, and expect us to do nothing about it", said Graham.
